The best honeymoon is the one that feels impossible to improve. Here are the destinations that consistently deliver that feeling — ranked by the combination of romance, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the honest likelihood of exceeding expectations.

My husband and I spent four months researching our honeymoon before we booked anything. We read every review, consulted every list, and interrogated every recently-married couple we knew. We eventually chose the Amalfi Coast and it exceeded everything we'd hoped for. But the research process taught me something more valuable than the destination itself: what makes a great honeymoon is almost never about the place. It's about the quality of slowness.

The best honeymoon destinations share certain qualities. They reward lingering. They have something extraordinary to look at from a breakfast table. They offer a combination of privacy and discovery — enough seclusion to feel like the world has contracted to just the two of you, enough novelty to keep exploring. And they have food worth eating slowly, with wine worth drinking to the bottom of the glass.

I've since interviewed dozens of couples about their honeymoons for various travel publications. The destinations that generate the most consistently passionate responses are usually not the most expensive or the most Instagrammed. They're the ones where something unexpected happened — a private beach discovered by accident, a restaurant found by getting lost, a night so clear the stars were overwhelming.

What follows is a ranked guide built from that research, updated for 2026 travel realities.

Where to Eat on Your Honeymoon

Splurge on one extraordinary dinner per destination. The honeymoon is not the trip to watch the restaurant budget. Nepenthe in Big Sur, Septime in Paris, Metaxi Mas in Santorini — one exceptional dinner creates a memory that lasts longer than a week of adequate ones.

Seek out the romantic local institution. Every great honeymoon destination has a restaurant that locals celebrate anniversaries at — not the most expensive, but the most beloved. Ask your hotel concierge for the place they would take their own partner.

Eat breakfast slowly every morning. The honeymoon breakfast — in bed, on a terrace, above a caldera, beside a rice paddy — is one of the great travel pleasures. Choose accommodation where breakfast is an event, not a transaction.

Avoid restaurants near major tourist sites. The restaurant 200 metres from the Eiffel Tower is never the right choice. Walk ten minutes in any direction and the quality doubles while the price halves.

Where to Stay: Honeymoon Principles

Splurge on at least one night at the best hotel in your destination. Even on a moderate budget, one night at a clifftop suite, an overwater villa, or a historic palazzo transforms the memory of the entire trip.

Prioritise the view from bed. The single most important feature of a honeymoon room is what you see when you wake up. A Santorini caldera view, a Maldives lagoon, a Tuscan vineyard — book the room where the view is the point.

Private plunge pools justify their premium. The ability to swim privately at any hour, without leaving your room, is the defining luxury of a great honeymoon hotel. Worth paying significantly more for.

Read recent reviews specifically from honeymooners. The experience of a honeymoon couple at a property is often meaningfully different from a business traveller or family. Seek out those specific reviews.

Top 10 Honeymoon Destinations Ranked

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy — Clifftop villages, extraordinary food, and Mediterranean light. Stay in Praiano or Ravello for privacy. Budget $300-600/night.

2. Maldives — Nothing matches an overwater villa above turquoise water. Worth the extraordinary cost for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Budget $600-2,000+/night.

3. Santorini, Greece — Caldera views, white villages, and the Aegean at golden hour. Go in May or September. Budget $300-600/night.

4. Kyoto, Japan — The ryokan experience — sake, yukata robes, kaiseki, private onsen — is intimate in a way Western hotels rarely achieve. Budget $400-800/night.

5. Tuscany, Italy — A villa in the Chianti hills, a rented car, cooking classes, and wine estates. Best for food-loving couples. Budget $200-500/night.

6. Bora Bora, French Polynesia — The original overwater bungalow destination. Otherworldly lagoon colours and absolute privacy. Budget $800-2,500+/night.

7. Maui, Hawaii — Most accessible luxury honeymoon for American couples. Road to Hana, Haleakalā sunrise, whale watching. Budget $300-800/night.

8. Portugal — Lisbon and the Douro Valley — Europe's best value honeymoon. Three nights in Lisbon, a week at a wine estate. Budget $150-400/night.

9. New Zealand — South Island — For adventure couples. Fiordland, Queenstown, and Mount Cook offer landscape that produces genuine awe. Budget $200-500/night.

10. St. Lucia, Caribbean — The Piton mountains and jungle coastline make this the most dramatic Caribbean island. Jade Mountain's open-wall suites are among the most romantic rooms on Earth. Budget $400-1,200/night.

Honeymoon Logistics

Book accommodation first, flights second. The best honeymoon hotels fill 6-12 months ahead in peak season. Decide where, book the key nights, then find flights.

Travel in shoulder season when possible. May, June, and September deliver near-peak weather at 20-40% lower prices across most destinations.

Build in completely unscheduled days. The best honeymoon moments are unplanned. Leave two or three days with nothing booked and let the destination decide.

Budget guide: $3,000-5,000 total for Portugal or Hawaii on a budget. $5,000-10,000 for Amalfi, Santorini, or Bali. $10,000-20,000 for Maldives or Bora Bora. $20,000+ for Aman or Four Seasons properties.

Best Time to Honeymoon

Spring — Recommended (April — June)

The best honeymoon season globally. European destinations are at their most beautiful, Southeast Asia is between monsoons, and Caribbean prices are falling after peak season. May is the single best honeymoon month worldwide.

Autumn (September — October)

European crowds thin in September, the Maldives enters dry season, and Japan approaches autumn foliage perfection. Excellent value and beautiful conditions across most destinations.

Avoid (December — January unless budget is unlimited)

Peak season everywhere means peak prices and peak crowds. Christmas and New Year travel costs significantly more for a measurably worse experience at most destinations.

The research I did before my own honeymoon taught me one thing above all others: the destination matters less than the intention. Every couple I interviewed who described their honeymoon as perfect had one thing in common — they'd decided before they left that the trip would be about each other, not about ticking off a sightseeing list.

The Amalfi Coast delivered exactly what we'd hoped for. So would most of the destinations on this list, applied to most couples, if approached with the same intention. The best honeymoon destination is the one you arrive at having already decided to be present.
